Canarian wines, a pleasure for the senses
The Canary Islands are a great gastronomic reference thanks to their simple but flavourful dishes. Something that also stands out about the islands are their wines. In fact, Canary Island wines are very popular all over the world. Their great distinction lies in the fact that the grapes are grown on volcanic soils and in very varied microclimates.
These factors have given Canarian wines a unique personality. There are 10 products labelled with destination of origin (D.O. = denominación de origen) on the islands and 5 of them are located in Tenerife. For this reason, the wines from this island, such as those from Tacoronte offered by La Navaja Restaurante, are some of the best known.
How to pair Canarian wines?
If you are looking for a restaurant in Tenerife where you can enjoy the best Canarian wines, at La Navaja we have a wide range of different products with the destination of origin label such as those of the Güímar Valley, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, or Tacoronte. The pairing of these wines will depend on whether it is a white, rosé or red wine.
White wines

Canarian white wines are mostly made with Malvasía, the Canary Islands’ grape par excellence, or with Listán Blanco. They go perfectly with seafood, white fish and stews with mild sauces. At La Navaja, you can enjoy these white wines with dishes such as sea bass with sautéed vegetables and wrinkled potatoes or rice with fish and seafood.
Red wines
If you want to pair Canarian red wines, you can choose meats such as veal or pork, and even fish, especially trout, tuna or salmon. Our recommendation is to pair Canarian red wines with dishes such as the Secreto Ibérico de Bellota (a “secret” cut from one of Spain’s acorn-fattened pigs) from Castro y González, beef sirloin with mushroom sauce, or salmon with wild asparagus and fine herbs sauce, three delicious dishes that you can find on the menu of La Navaja Restaurant.
Rosé wines
Rosé wines from Valle de Güímar and Lanzarote, made from Tempranillo or Listán Negro grapes, go very well with seafood dishes such as grilled wild prawns, octopus Canarian style or steamed or seafood mussels. Rosé wines, in general, also go perfectly with salads.
